Gastro Experiences

Bon Appétit!

We know, you’ve worked up an appetite touring Bakar and the surrounding areas, so it’s high time we touch on gastronomic recommendations. Bakar and its area have much to offer in that regard. Everyone can find something to suit their gastronomic desires. Whether you’re a meat lover, seafood lover with a view of the sea, or a lover of excellent pizzas, you will be disappointed!

Bakar Baškot

Another name for a favorite Bakar snack is the Bakar baškot. This ring-shaped pastry used to sail the world with Bakar sailors, helping them quell their hunger on the journey. Baškots are very practical because of their shape and recipe. They could be tied up and hung, making it harder for mice on the ship to reach. Apart from that, when well-dried, they could heep for months, reminding the sailors of the tastes and scents of home. Today you can try them in the Bakar bakery „Bakarski Baškot,“ the so-called baškotarna, in their dried and contemporary, soft form.

Bakar Cake

There is no lunch without dessert. The people of Bakar know this well, which is why they created their proprietary dessert – the famous Bakar Cake – almost two centuries ago.  This cake, consisting of alternating light and dark sponge, with a rich but light walnut cream between the sponges, is one of those dishes that were once enjoyed by the more affluent residents of Bakar as part of a festive menu, as well as by passengers on ships that used to dock in Bakar. Today, the bakery “Vrbnik” prepares Bakar Cake according to the traditional recipe, which was lost until recently.

Although the appearance of this dessert may deceive you, since it looks like a typical rich cake, it is quite the opposite. It is very light, and the only danger is that you will want more.

Bakarska Vodica Sparkling Wine

Where there’s good food, there must be good drinks! The same is true for Bakar. The most famous historical drink of Bakar is the famous Bakarska Vodica, a sparkling wine originally made exclusively from grapes from the Bakarski Prezidi and is available in limited quantities. If you’re lucky, you can get your bottle at the agricultural cooperative “Dolčina” in Praputnjak. Thanks to them, a part of the Prezidi was renovated at the beginning of the 20th century, and the art of making the original Bakarska vodica, inspired by French sparkling wines of the 18th century, was continued.
